The smell really got to me, too! Of course, it didn't help that the first vendor put the "snake on a stick" right in my face! I was told that the horrible smell in "stinky tofu". I am not sure if that is correct or not, but once we arrived in Jinan and headed down a similar street with those "distinct" smells, our 5 year old daughter refused to go any further down the street!
